Lesnes Abbey Heathland circular walk: 545 yards

This is a circular walk from The View bus stop on Woolwich Road. You will see highlights of Lesnes Abbey Heathland.

The walk is about 545 yards (or 0.5 km) through woodland on packed earth paths, firm underfoot when dry.

The nearest accessible toilets are Abbey Wood Station).

Route grade

  • Moderate - Not accessible to people using wheelchairs due to the kissing gate at stage 3.
  • Paved or hard packed earth surface, with some hills to climb. Routes changeable in wet conditions.

Getting to the start of the walk

Abbey Wood is the nearest train station.

Woolwich Road/The View is the nearest bus stop (bus route 99).

Take the bus from Abbey Wood Train Station. Go to bus stop E, and catch bus B11 (heading towards Bexleyheath). change at Brampton Road to bus 99 (towards Erith) to The View.

Route segment 1

The route starts from the bus stop on Woolwich Road and The View. Turn left as you get off the bus and walk back up to The View.

Then turn right and walk to the end of The View.

You come to a kissing gate. Go through the gate and take the path on your right.

There is a fork in the path, keep on the right. You come out into an open area known as heathland.

A short way along you come to an information board about nature in the area. The information board is on your left. You are in a flattish area with patches of heather on your left. Keep going straight past the sign.

You come to a patch of warped oak trees and Green Chain marker. Turn turn left at the marker and leave the Green Chain. If the path goes downhill steadily you have gone too far.

The path follows around the outside of the heathland. The path is not well marked. Take the left path before the heathland drops away into a gully. You pass a metal bench (dedicated to Kenneth Brian Matthews) on your right.

Just past the metal bench you come to a Green Chain marker post on your left, and wooden Green Chain bench on your right. Turn right and walk past the Green Chain bench, keeping it on your left. You pass another Green Chain marker post next to the bench.

A short way up you come to a T intersection, turn left here. The path goes uphill slightly.

Turn right at the next junction and follow the path back up to the kissing gate.

Go through the kissing gate and walk to the end of The View on the left hand side of the road.

Turn left at the end of The View. This takes you back onto Woolwich Road. The bus stop is in front of you.
